Galiano Island is one of the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, just across the Georgia Strait from Vancouver and the lower mainland, and nestled against the eastern shores of Vancouver Island. Ours is a long but narrow island, being approximately 25 km in length, but less than 5 km across at its widest place. Although less than a one hour ferry ride from Vancouver and Victoria, Galiano maintains its rural atmosphere. The large majority of the island is covered with forest, through which are scattered the dwellings of the Galiano full and part-time residents. The businesses on the island are clustered in three areas in the southern end of the island. It is within this idyllic environment that the 1200 residents of Galiano’s live.
The Galiano Island community has welcomed our bookstore since we opened almost 12 years ago, making it possible for us to continue on despite the small size of the island’s permanent population. In addition to more than our fair share of writers, artists and film makers, Galiano boasts a community of innovators in such diverse areas as architecture, entrepreneurism, teaching, gardening and sustainable food production and forestry management. Of course, most of these innovative people are readers, and buy books from our independent bookstore. We at the bookstore are grateful to them, not only for the support they show our store but for the diversity and richness of experience they bring to the island.
We at the bookstore are deeply committed to giving back to this community through such activities as holding author events, supporting other island businesses, holding fundraising events and co-operating in many ways with important institutions on our island, including the Health Care Society, the Galiano Library, our community school and many other groups. We encourage our staff to volunteer in community organizations and do so as owners as well. In short, we are strongly committed to supporting our community and feel very heartened by the many positive comments we get from community members regarding our activities.
We also feel very strongly that our community goes beyond the shores of Galiano Island, not just through our visitors who come in to the store to purchase books from our wide selection, but throughout the wider book community including the authors, publishers and other independent bookstore owners as well as, of course, all of you booklovers who help keep the world of books alive and vibrant.
