A

Advance reading copy

a copy of the book sent to reviewers and booksellers, usually with publication dates, marketing plans etc on book, often will differ with final copy as final edits may be done

Annuals

books published yearly

As new

refers to the condition of the book, is in perfect or new condition

Association copy

a book that was either owned by its author, or someone closely associated with the author, or owned by someone who is closely connected to the contents of the book

B

Binding

cover of the book see also cloth, wrappers

Board book

a form of the book usually for very young children, the book is more durable and often printed in hard cardboard

Book club edition

a book that was printed for a book club,as in the"Book of the Month Club", usually cheaper to produce, usually available to book club members by subscription only and are not as valuable to collectors

Bookplate

a label usually pasted to the front end papers which states ownership of the book

Broadside

a sheet of paper, usually of a larger size that is printed on one side only, often used for poetry, announcements of sales of the book

C

Chapbook

a small book or pamphlet, often a collection of poetry or prose

Cloth

binding consisting of boards covered with cloth

Colophon

a printer's reference at the end of a book which usually gives the place of printing, name of the printer and other details about the book

Contempoary

a term used to describe a book or piece of art or other works that was published or produced in the last decade or it might also refer to the fact that all the components of the book or work were created at the same time the book or other work was printed or produced

Copyright

who owns the rights to a given edition

Copyright page

usually follows the title page and lists information about the various editions and copyrights

Cover

the binding of the book

D

Dedication page

the page that lists the persons and/or institutions to whom the author has committed the book, usually found on the opposite page to the copyright page

Dust jacket

many modern books are published in a paper cover that protects the binding and helps market the book

E

Edges

usually refers to the outer edges of the leaves of a book

Edition

all books printed from the same type set or, for more recent books, print run

Endpaper

the paper at the beginning and end of the text, with one-half pasted to the cover

Ephemera

non-book material of interest printed at the time of publishing date, usually pamphlets, programs, broadsides

Ex-libris

means from the library of, used in bookplates

F

First edition

a copy of a book from the first printing

First trade edition

the first edition printed for general sale

Folio

refers to the number of times a sheet was folded before being cut to form pages

Foxing

often found in 19th century books, brown rusty spots to the leaves caused by a chemical reaction

Fronispiece

an illustration placed at the beginning of a book, just before the title page

Full leather

full leather binding of the book

G

Galley

the earliest printing of a book used by a proofreader and author to check errors

Gilt edges

often refers to the smoothly cut and gilded edges on all three sides of the book

H

Hinge

the part of the book where the cover meets the spine, usually referring to the inside of the book

I

Illuminated

a book embellished with decorative aspects that are typically hand-painted in rich colours and sometimes gilded

Imprint

refers either to the publisher or the place of publication, usually found at the bottom of the title page or in a colophon at the back of the book

Inscription

used to denote a signing by the author or illustrator or a note to the recipient of the book

Joint

area of the book where the spine meets the covers, usually referring to the outside of the book

K

L

Laid in

a paper or letter placed inside the book but not glued in

Large print edition

a book printed with large type for people with poor eyesight

Leaf/leaves

refers to the page or pages of a book each consisting of two pages

Library binding

a book with a stronger binding than the customary book binding and intended for use in a public library

Library edition

refers to a book that may be printed on a better quality of paper and/or with a stronger binding than the standard edition

Limited edition

a book with a small number of copies printed,often signed and numbered

M

Manuscript

the original text of an author's work, handwritten, or typed

Marbled

paper decorated with a marble pattern, often used in endpapers or on boards of a book

Mass market

a paperback book that is printed on much smaller leaves than the original cloth version, usually approximately 4 x 7 inches. Because the pages are considerably smaller, Mass Market books typically have smaller print and/or more pages than the original cloth release of a book. Typically, only large volume selling books are released in this format.

Mint

usually refers to the condition of a book, either a brand new copy or in the same condition-many rare book dealers and collectors are more familiar with as new to describe this condition

Modern first

first editions of books published in the 20th century

Morocco

leather made from goat hides

No date

used to describe a book with no publication date listed

No place/no publisher

used to describe a book with no place or publisher listed

O

Offset, offsetting

the transfer of ink from one printed sheet to another, or oxidation from something that was placed in the book

Out-of-print

a book or publication that is no longer available from the publisher

P

Page

one side of a leaf

Paperback

a book with a paper cover

Paste down

the half of the endpaper which has been pasted down to the inside of the cover

Pirated edition

an unauthorized edition that is often sold abroad without payment to the author

Plates

whole page illustrations printed on separate paper and usually inserted to the text during binding

Porfolio

a portable case used to protect loose papers, plates that usually consists of two boards joined by a cloth or paper spine, also can refer to an artist's body of work

Presentation copy

a copy of a book presented by the author often around publication date

Price clipped

price has been clipped off the dust jacket flap

Printing

the total number of copies of an edition of a book or can also refer to another type of publication printed at one time

Private printing

refers to a book printed by an individual or small group of people, usually not intended for public sale

Proof

a copy of the book that is pre-publication intended for the use of editors and reviewers,usually bound in plain printed wrappers

Publication material

materials, such as photographs and author biographies provided by the publishers for reviewers and booksellers, often laid in the book

Q

R

Remainder

when a book has stopped selling, a publisher might remove it from their list by “remaindering” it

Remainder mark

when a publisher sells remainders, often mark the bottoms or page edges with a stamp, or other type of mark such as a black line

Review copy

a copy of a book given to a reviewer prior to publication and containing a review slip or other publication material

Review slip

an announcement of the date and price of the book being published

Rubbing

signs of wear from general use which causes fading of the book cover or binding

S

Series title

a term describing a group of books printed with a common theme, one book often following another, often but not always written by the same author

Shaken

a book with leaves or signatures that are loose but still attached

Signature

a group of leaves consisting of sequential pages of a book that are folded and sewed together in the binding process; the full book will consist of a number of signatures

Slipcase

a box with an open side, usually specially bound in paper, cloth, or leather that the book can slip into and provides protection

T

Title page

page near the beginning of the book which has the full title, author, editor, and publisher and place of publication, publication date and edition. Helpful in cataloguing books.

Trade edition

an edition of the book published for the general trade and different from for example a limited edition of the book

Trade paper

a paperback book that is typically printed with leaves that are the same or close to the same size as those used in the original cloth version of the book, as opposed to Mass Market

U

Unbound

the book has never been bound

Uncut

the edges of the leaves of the book are unevenly trimmed
